The arrival of the artists and the beau monde changed the face of Sitges the impact thereof can be seen (and felt) till this day, making the town much more than just a beach destination. Beautiful villas were built along the beachfront, and the town center, with its maze of narrow streets, saw the arrival of gorgeous, Gaudí-esque, Art Nouveau buildings. In the 20th century, various Catalan families who had made their fortunes in the Americas returned to Sitges. From that point onwards, the town attracted artists, architects and the beau monde. Sitges was a sleepy fishing town with several historic monuments until the late-19th century when a group of famous Catalan artists took up residence there. Aside from the beaches, there are Art Nouveau buildings, picturesque lanes, centuries-old festivals, museums and a plethora of restaurants, cafés and bars. The beaches are the main attraction but I highly recommend spending at least a few days there as there are a lot more things to do in Sitges. Sitges is a small coastal town situated 34 kilometers southwest of Barcelona ( map), Catalonia.
